General overhaul Hamburg–Berlin: With a length of 278 kilometres, this railway line is one of the most important axes in German and European rail transport. More than 470 trains a day make this route the most frequently used direct connection between two cities in Germany. Intensive use, combined with maximum speeds of up to 230 km/h, causes considerable wear and tear on the infrastructure. Regular and comprehensive maintenance measures are therefore essential to ensure reliable and safe rail operations in the long term. The heavily used Hamburg–Berlin line will now undergo comprehensive renovation from August 2025 to April 2026, following the example of the first general overhaul on the Riedbahn line.
The general overhaul will be carried out in three phases:
Following a Europe-wide tendering process, we were awarded the contract for the work in Lot 2 last year together with LEONHARD WEISS – and in July 2025, we were also awarded three project contracts in Lot 1. We will keep you regularly updated on the current progress of the construction work here and hope you enjoy browsing our project page.

Update #6 – 5. September 2025
Our teams give their all every day along a stretch of almost 150 km! Between Hamburg-Rothenburgsort and Dergenthin near Perleberg, work is underway everywhere to renew the Hamburg–Berlin railway line. Rails, sleepers and points are being replaced, and electronic signal boxes, overhead lines, signals, crossings and cable duct systems are being rebuilt.
The scope of services is enormous, and the list could go on almost endlessly. One part of the project involves the complete renovation of several transport stations. Lot 1 includes Büchen station. The work on the platforms is particularly challenging because lines 6100 and 1150 intersect here and the logistics traffic for the many construction projects is correspondingly high. Lot 2 includes the stations in Karstädt, Jasnitz and Strohkirchen. At all four stations to be worked on by SPITZKE, demolition is proceeding gradually, while new construction has already begun. In Karstädt, Jasnitz and Strohkirchen, the platforms are being extended by approx. 30 m, and the construction of new platform edges is in full swing. In addition to extending the platforms to accommodate longer trains, the height of the platform edges is being standardised. Currently, the heights range between 38 and 76 cm, but the new platforms will all be 76 cm high. We wish everyone involved in the general renovation every success, especially our colleagues. This time, we would like to extend a special greeting to the Large Scale Projects/Structural Engineering Division and our partners beck-bau GmbH and H. Klostermann Baugesellschaft mbH.
Update #5 – 22. August 2025
In Dergenthin, Heinrich der Starke, our Track-renewal train UM-S 2001, began replacing rails and sleepers in Lot 2 (Dergenthin–Büchen) this week. The old sleepers are being recycled at our production plant in Möllenhagen and the material wagons are being loaded with new sleepers.
The first six points are also being installed in Dergenthin using conventional construction methods with our Oskar track-laying crane. In Ludwigslust, the first 22 OLA foundations have been completed, and work is proceeding at full speed at the Karstädt, Jasnitz and Strohkirchen stations. More on the three transport stations in a subsequent article.
In Lot 1 (Hamburg–Büchen), the first 6 of 28 points have been replaced and two station tracks rebuilt at the Billwerder marshalling yard, which remains in operation and where work can only be carried out during weekend closures. A number of tasks have been completed on the main line in the first few weeks. Our team installed 51 track crossings, constructed 40 foundations and has even started installing the new overhead line at Büchen station. The dismantling of the four platforms is also so far advanced that the first new construction can begin on Monday.
Congratulations to everyone involved on these achievements in the first three weeks!
Update #4 – 6. August 2025
Following the official launch of the general overhaul Hamburg–Berlin last Friday, work is now getting underway in earnest. Under the watchful eyes of media representatives, our RM 900 S ballast cleaning machine is continuing with the track reconstruction in Lot 2 near Dergenthin today.
In addition, our teams at Dergenthin station are preparing everything for the installation of points, while at the same time in Ludwigslust, track dismantling for the pedestrian underpass and railway overpass is being carried out and preparations are being made for the installation of a points harp. Our professionals have also started work on other sections. In Klein Warnow, for example, track switching equipment is being dismantled, and in Jassnitz, Karstädt and Strohkirchen, our colleagues from the Large Scale Projects/Structural Engineering division are working in the stations. Furthermore, the renewal of the overhead line system (OLA) is on the agenda, for which dismantling is in full swing.
In Lot 1, the dismantling of the OLA has also begun at Büchen station, where the four platforms are also being dismantled. Today, Wednesday, the foundation work for the new OLA will begin. Although the Billwerder marshalling yard is not part of the main line, it must remain in operation as it serves a container terminal. To this end, two points were changed over the weekend. Our LST teams (Control and safety technology) are now working hard on the dismantling, while the KTB teams (underground cable installation) are busy with the materialisation of the entire construction site.
Update #3 – 1. August 2025
Today marks the start of the nine-month general overhaul of the important Hamburg–Berlin railway line. The official start of the nine-month renovation work was given this morning at the kick-off event in Ludwigslust, which was attended by Philipp Nagl, CEO of DB InfraGO, and representatives of the five federal states involved in the project, among others.
We are working on Lot 1 from Hamburg-Rothenburgsort to Büchen and Lot 2 from Büchen to Dergenthin with our consortium partner LEONHARD WEISS. Tonight, the overhead line along the entire route, which at 278 km is around four times as long as that of the Riedbahn, will be switched off and the construction tracks laid. The railway line is Germany’s most important direct city connection and is heavily used, with up to 470 trains per day in some sections. We are tackling this major project between the two cities, each with a population of over a million, and will be carrying out comprehensive services over the next few months. Our teams from across the entire group of companies are drawing on their experience from the general renovation of the Riedbahn. We wish everyone involved lots of energy and good cooperation!
Update #2 – 3. July 2025
Deutsche Bahn recently awarded the contract for the last remaining construction phase between Hamburg-Rothenburgsort and Büchen (Lot 1) – and we will also play a key role here. In addition to Lot 2 (within a consortium), we are implementing three project contracts in Lot 1. Between 1 August and 30 April 2026, a total of approximately 180 km of track and over 200 sets of points will be renewed on the Hamburg–Berlin line, and work will be carried out at 28 stations. Update #1 – 25. November 2024
The general overhaul of the next scheduled corridor project has been finalised. Work will begin between Hamburg and Berlin in August 2025, and we will be involved once again. The contracts for the next corridor project have been signed and we have been commissioned. Following a Europe-wide tendering process, we and LEONHARD WEISS have been awarded the contract to implement the nine-month major project ‘High-Performance Corridor Hamburg-Berlin Lot 2’. Read more
