On July 1, 2024, the extensively renovated and historic Berlin-Schöneweide station, refurbished by SPITZKE, was officially opened in the presence of representatives from politics and the Deutsche Bahn. This event marked the completion of several years of construction work.
Among the attendees were Alexander Kaczmarek, Corporate Representative for the States of Berlin, Brandenburg, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern at Deutsche Bahn, Ute Bonde, Senator for Mobility, Traffic, Climate, and Environment in Berlin, and Oliver Igel, District Mayor of Treptow-Köpenick. They all addressed and greeted the project participants and press representatives.
The comprehensive renovation of Berlin-Schöneweide station is a major project that is unparalleled in its complexity due to the protection of historical buildings. On the one hand, this was due to the crucial importance of the station for regional and local transport in the south-eastern periphery of the federal capital. It required renovation during ongoing operations and thus created an island scenario. In addition, the requirements for the protection of historical buildings presented a unique challenge for the SPITZKE teams.
Most notably are the canopies over the three platforms which rest on historic cast metal supports. These supports were either meticulously restored – if still present – or recast according to historical models. Similarly, the supervisor booths on the platforms were dismantled and rebuilt. Here, too, it was essential to save as much of the original material as possible – in accordance with historical protection regulations. Further elements, such as the mosaic tiles, were replicated based on historical designs.
