Dresdner Bahn Railway Line Commences Operations

We’ve been working on the Dresdner Bahn project for a good five years. Yesterday, its official completion was celebrated with a special train journey from Berlin-Südkreuz to the Berlin-Brandenburg airport.

We’ve done it: The Dresdner Bahn project, which was both highly successful and extremely challenging for our entire group, has come to an end. In a joint venture (JV), construction work on the new double-track, electrified line began in 2020 under our technical leadership. The main objectives of the upgrade were to strengthen regional, long-distance, and freight rail services, increase speeds in Berlin to up to 160 km/h and outside urban areas to up to 200 km/h, and provide a fast connection to Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER).

With the timetable change on December 14, regional and long-distance trains will operate on the new tracks for the first time, using the new overhead contact line system. According to Deutsche Bahn AG, the direct route will reduce travel time on the Airport Express service from Berlin Central Station (Berlin Hbf) to BER from the previous 39 minutes to approximately 23 minutes, nearly cutting it in half.

Participants in Thursday’s special journey from Berlin Südkreuz the BER Airport included Patrick Schnieder (Federal Transport Ministry), Philipp Nagl (CEO of DB InfraGO AG), Ute Bonde (Berlin Senator for Transport) and Detlef Tabbert (Brandenburg Minister of Infrastructure) as well as Regina Kraushaar (Saxony’s Minister of Infrastructure).

We congratulate all colleagues who were involved and sincerely thank them for their commitment.
