Second Phase of the Ammerseebahn Rail Project

The record-breaking project for our Buchloe branch continues. The Ammersee Bahn will be completed by mid-December 2025. Following intensive planning and the completion of the detailed design, work on the Ammersee Bahn rail project resumed this week. Due to the large scope of the renewal works, the work was divided over two years. After the construction sections 4 (Dießen–Weilheim), 3 (Utting–Dießen) and 2 (Schondorf–Utting) were completed at the end of last year under extremely challenging soil and ground conditions, section 1 between Geltendorf and Schondorf is next in the second Phase of the Ammerseebahn Rail Project.

Extensive modernization works are now underway until the middle of December. This includes ballast works with full or partial renewal of the base grade protection layer over a total length of approx. 13,000 meters. In addition, 16,000 meters of rail and 20,000 sleepers will be replaced. Beyond the planned scope of work, an additional 2,700 meters in construction sections 2-4 must be reworked despite the 2024 renewal due to poor subsoil conditions. For our formation rehabilitation and cleaning machine Katharina die Große this means that the RPM-RS-900 will now return to Lake Ammersee for an additional 28 shifts in the second construction phase, this is after 18 shifts in 2024.  That totals 46 sifts at Bavaria’s third largest lake. When was the last time that happened?

Our project management expects material handling volumes of nearly 200,000 metric tons this year alone on the extensive Ammersee Bahn project. In addition to the conventional reconstruction sections, our colleagues in Buchloe are also responsible for renewing two points, several level crossing surfaces as well as 2,000 m of deep drainage and 13 culverts.
