Challenging Construction Project Between Düsseldorf and Leverkusen

“We are proud of our performance on this construction project between Düsseldorf and Leverkusen. A big ‘THANK YOU’ to everyone involved for their exceptional dedication and smooth cooperation on this extremely time-sensitive site,” sums up our construction manager Jochen from the West Competence Center. Both the planning and execution of the main tasks were each allotted only three weeks. His conclusion: “The preliminary acceptance was flawless and met the full satisfaction of the client and railway plant manager.”

In this project, a huge volume of work was carried out on around 14 km under the leadership of the West Competence Center. Extensive measures were carried out on the Düsseldorf Eller-Süd to Langenfeld route, on which we implemented the new overhead line of the RRX in September 2023 (see below). In addition to the mechanical track reconstruction and ballast cleaning, a total of 18 sections – mostly bridges with under-gravel mat bonding from 20 m to 370 m in length – were conventionally rebuilt. In 18 cases, this meant additional insertion and removal of our assembly line technology.

Punctual Completion for the EURO 2024 Kickoff

All those involved can be especially proud of having managed a tight schedule and very short lead time. The long-distance railway line 2650, on which ICE trains travel at speeds of up to 200 km/h, is one of the busiest routes in Germany and a crucial hub for passenger traffic between Cologne and the Ruhr area. Given the start of the European Championship and the locations of the matches in Cologne, Düsseldorf, Gelsenkirchen, and Dortmund, it was particularly important to complete the main work, which began on May 24, on time for today’s EM opening match between Germany and Scotland. By Tuesday, the follow-up work will be carried out during nighttime closures, including the dismantling of safety measures over a 14 km stretch by our WSO team (German).

In addition to the execution of the construction project, the short lead time posed a particular challenge. There were only 25 calendar days between the submission and the starting date of the project, and just 17 days from the award of the contract. A big “thank you” to everyone involved for the excellent preparation and vigorous execution is such a short time-period. Thanks to you, the construction project between Düsseldorf and Leverkusen was completed on time.
